Summary
What if Rayla was right, and killing Ezran couldn't have freed the assassins because they were bound to avenge a death that hadn't yet happened? Runaan wavers in his convictions and gathers the other assassins to her cause. He will have to learn to let Rayla forge her own path, as she will learn to step out of the shadows cast by all of her parents. These human princes show a level of honor and respect to the elves that the assassins are unused to, and both sides must question everything they were taught.
Note: major character death is in reference to King Harrow, who is not actually dead, but everyone in the story will believe that he is and it's narrated as such, so it's getting the warning anyways. No one else is going to die I promise.

Ares scoops the smaller god out of the box and cradles him in his arms. "All will soon be well," Ares murmurs soothingly. "The king is lying in a pool of his own blood, deeply regretting his life choices. I ensured that his coming death could not be considered peaceful."
Thanatos remains still, bound by the chains. The only indication that he can even hear Ares is the slight relief that shows through his eyes at Ares's words.
"I cannot free you from these chains myself, but I know who can."

Death is angry.
Ares can sense it even from across the battlefield, the red, boiling fury he knows better than any other. It is the desire for violence, the drive to fight, the will to harm. A selfish anger. An anger he is so very familiar with, for it is the anger that coaxes kings into conflict, compels soldiers into battle, feeds strife until it is ripe for picking. It is the anger that fuels wars.
But he has never, in all his existence, felt that anger radiating from Death Incarnate.
Ares revels in this anger, in what it represents. But it ill suits Thanatos, he who grants peace to those felled by that very anger, and such as it is the first time Ares has felt this anger radiating from the God of Death, so is it the first time the God of War takes no pleasure from the sensation.

"Sisyphus?" Zagreus sees his own brow furrow in the mirror. "I run into him sometimes in Tartarus. I know he's sentenced to roll a boulder up a steep incline for all eternity, and I know he named it Bouldy."
"Do you know what earned him that punishment?"
Zagreus opens his mouth to answer. To say he cheated death, and to argue he does not deserve such a harsh eternity. He opens his mouth, only to close it again. There is something sharp behind Thanatos' words. Something jagged, rusted, but no less harmful if it catches your skin.
"You know… Suddenly, I'm not sure I really do."

Zagreus drags his feet forward. Bitterness is a heavy weight in his chest and he takes it out on a pebble, only- it’s not a pebble. His foot goes through it with a gasp and Zagreus squints, recognizes in the span of a breath the fuzzy edges of a large, dark gray feather.

Hi, do you remember those like "Lisanna replaces Lucy in Team Natsu, and now abandoned Lucy has to get revenge" fanfics? Because holy shit, so do I! Those were a massive part of my childhood. I've grown up, and I wanted to write a love letter to that genre of fics, but with no Lisanna bashing, just two girls who are compared to each other. No guild bashing either, just misunderstandings and the weight of perceived expectations.
Or: Before, when Lisanna was still dead, Lucy didn't mind people saying they were similar. In fact, she took it as a compliment that they saw a bit of their dead loved one in Lucy. Now that Lisanna is back, however, it's different.
