She’s surprised when Sam’s face becomes something devastating, a poorly-masked expression of grief and fear and denial. It reminds her of his appearance many years ago—that constant expression he wore surrounding the end of Riley’s life.
But Sam had loved Riley. And this is just… Bucky. Bucky, who she’s heard him complain about at every opportunity, who, just a couple months ago, he claimed to hate.

“Fucking hell, shut up and go back to sleep,” Sam grumbles. God, Barnes is too masochist for his own good. Is that a super soldier thing? “I got you, man. I’m right here.”
And that must be the right thing to say, because Bucky lists sideways again. His head lands on Sam’s shoulder. Sam tenses just for a moment, because he wasn’t expecting Bucky to do it – but then it doesn’t matter, because it’s a comfortable pressure against his side.
Can feel Bucky where he’s pressed up against him, still just the slightest bit tense, still struggling between sleep and wakefulness.
“Sleep, Bucky,” Sam murmurs.
And that’s all it takes. All the remaining tension bleeds out of Bucky’s limbs, and he settles heavily against Sam’s side, a warm and welcome pressure. And Sam has read about things like weighted blankets, but never really considered them before. That might have to change, though, because Bucky’s weight against him feels grounding in a way he didn’t know anything could.
Five times Sam helped Bucky with his nightmares, and the one time Bucky returned the favor.

It’s been a long and winding road, for both of them. But Sam’s glad for where they’ve ended up. If someone had asked him a year ago whether he could imagine being glad that he was in Bucky Barnes’ bed, Sam would’ve laughed until he choked on it. Now, though, he can’t imagine it happening any other way. Bucky fills all the empty places in Sam’s heart until it feels like he was always meant to be there.

There are things that always happen, no matter how hard he tries: El doesn’t arrive in time. Eddie dies. Max is put in a coma.
Steve fails. They lose.
“Steve, how many loops have you been through?”
His head is nodding, and his eyes are watery, and Eddie has approached him like a spooked animal.
“I lost count.”

Sam’s finger hovers over the delete button for the fourth time that day. He can see the timestamp, it matches too closely to the timestamp on the files in front of him. The countless documents he just can’t seem to make sense of.
Everything is a reminder of Bucky. Everywhere he goes, he hears his voice ringing through his ears. Everytime he closes his eyes, he sees Bucky’s weathered yet gentle face staring back at him. Everytime he sleeps, he dreams of the blood, cold, stiff skin pressing against his own, his screams ripping through him while clear pure tears mixed with thick red blood, a polarising stark contrast that sends Sam nearly spiralling into another breakdown everytime he even dares think about it.
He knows what’s in the voicemail. He can see the timestamp.
New Voicemail: Bucky Barnes - 2:46am, Friday, June 16, 2025.
He looks down at the documents, and he feels that hole unsheath its claws and dig into him again, tightening its grasp until all the air has left Sam again.
Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes. Born March 10, 1917. Age 107. Time of Death: 3:01am, June 16, 2025.
