Summary
Zoey and Mira had learned in the most painful way that it was silence that destroyed lives. Silence was a monster that lurked in the shadows, taking happiness and twisting it into a fear indescribable. Silence was a closed room that remained closed for far too long. And silence was what took Rumi from them.
Zoey is tired of being silent. Mira is too.
It's been four months since Rumi's disappearance. Four weeks since their second first date—a date to remind themselves of each other, even when the third part of their hearts and souls was gone. Four minutes since Zoey knelt down and sent her most recent letter, hoping against hope that she wasn't too late.
Hoping that there's still a Rumi to save.

“I went to her.” Rumi doesn’t say how she got to Celine, that the world opened up beneath her and did her bidding, for once, and it felt good.
“I got down on my knees.” She doesn’t say that the dirt was cold, that the touch of it surprised her.
“I offered her my weapon.” She doesn’t say that her weapon was warm in her hands, almost gentle. Comforting laid across her palms.
“Rumi, stop,” Zoey begs. “Please, Mira.” Her voice is thick with tears through full-body, shuddering sobs.
“No, Zoey.” Mira’s voice shakes. With fury or terror or sheer emotion, Rumi doesn’t know. “Let her say it,” Mira cuts in.
“I asked her to do what she should’ve done a long time ago.” She exhales, just a little. She knows the full truth of it, what they are asking for. She just has to say it.
Not just that she asked Celine. Not just that she cried.
That Rumi yearned for it.

Senses returned to her one by one, and the re-acquisition of each came with its own profound sense of regret. There was a coppery, unpleasant smell mixed with the wild scents of earth and sweat. Hearing—well, that wasn’t working too well. All she could hear was a distant ringing and the repeating echo of a deafening crack, trapped within her mind.
Pain, though, that was working just fine.

Summary
The battle is won, but the victory leaves cracks behind.
Rumi is left with shame, with guilt, with regrets too heavy to hold. She wants to stay, she wants the pain to stop, and she does not know how to have both.
Zoey is glad to have her friends beside her, but in the quiet hours fear settles in. Rumi lied to her, Mira walked away, and she is terrified they will break again. Fear is too much to carry, so she turns it into anger instead.
For Mira, relief never comes. All she sees are her mistakes, the ways she almost lost them both. She stops questioning, stops thinking, and clings to what she has left. She is the sword, she is the shield, she will rip herself apart if it means keeping them safe.
They do not talk about how close the darkness gets, or how much it hurts to stay. But in the silence between fear and comfort, something gentle takes root, something tender and stubborn that feels like hope. Something worth fighting for.

In hindsight, it should have been obvious. The way Rumi refused to go to the bathhouse, her bizarre relationship with Celine, this whole thing with the Saja Boys? Mira prided herself on reading people, and she felt stupid for not seeing it sooner. The pieces were all there, just waiting to be put together.
Rumi was gay.
The night after the joint signing with the Saja Boys, Mira went to confront Rumi about her ongoing weird behavior. Instead of letting hurt feelings drive the conversation, Mira took a minute to try and figure out what might be wrong. Unfortunately, she came to the completely wrong conclusion.
Misunderstandings ensue. They talk it out.

Summary
Zoey had always enjoyed putting things together.
From building Lego sets with her older brother in his room. To replacing car parts with her father on a Tuesday morning in July. To lazy evenings sat at the coffee table piecing together a jigsaw puzzle with her mom. There was a certain satisfaction Zoey found in going from a thousand splintered pieces to a finished product.
Huntrix is a fractured mess in the wake of Gwi-ma’s defeat. The tenuous relationship they’d started in the back third of the world tour was straining at the edges and threatening to buckle under the weight of their individual betrayals.
On the surface everything seemed fine - they were professionals after all. From the outside not a single hair or emotion was out of place. No faults to exploit, no fears to be shown.
But they were still cowards, still liars.
And Zoey isn’t sure if she knows how to fix the broken pieces of her heart.

Rumi's not stupid. She knows what the warm, fuzzy feeling she gets in her chest every time Zoey smiles at her means. She knows why her heart skips a beat whenever Mira smirks at her after a dumb joke. She doesn’t even think the others have realized it, yet. How much they love each other. How much she loves them.
It’s so easy to love them, Rumi thinks desperately. It’s so easy to slip her hands into theirs when they go on a grocery run. So easy to rest her head on Mira’s when they’re watching a scary movie. So easy to give Zoey a headpat when she’s pouting.
(It would be so easy to love them.)
