“Look up there,” His mother said to him, her voice low and pleasant to his ears as he obeyed. He felt such an intense surge of wonderment filling him, the type that only a child could feel, as the stars stretched out into the far beyond.
He had reached up towards them like they were close enough to touch.
The sky had been filled with them, back then. Countless specks of lights dominating the black canvas, leaving no part of it barren. Even behind them there were colorful streaks and blotches, as if the sky itself could not contain its magic.
“They will be here long after we are gone”
“Really? Won’t they lose their light someday?”
“No. They are so much more than we are. So very special. We owe them very much.”
Many of the stars he had known then were now gone, and there was no color left behind. Instead the sky was now an endless sort of void.
So much for eternity. He thought, only a little mad. To think that I would outlive the stars after all.

“But they haven't done anything?”

The graveyard was as miserable a sight as always. During the epidemic, it had been a hot-spot for the type of beasts McCullum felt his fingers itch to strike down. Now, it was empty. The monsters left in London nowadays were smarter things, capable of hiding, of stalking, of thought. They knew better than to stick around a place like this, especially now that the Guard were back in their usual numbers.
But there was one not so wise beast, and it was as much waiting for McCullum as McCullum had been waiting to catch sight of it, as he strolled in-between the graves of the long forgotten and no-longer grieved.
There were a few minutes in which McCullum did not approach the figure up ahead on the stone path. The doctor stood shrouded in shadow- though that wasn’t quite right. Shrouded implied that the man was capable of being hidden by them, rather than being a part of them. It was a difficult distinction to make, but McCullum was trained in spotting the differences.
Dr. Reid was not shrouded by the shadows, no. He was dressed in them.Series

He looked at his sister, and Mistyfoot looked momentarily awkward. Her pale blue-gray fur, so similar to his own, bristled under a mellow breeze.
