“Ilya, what are we gonna do?” Shane says.
Ilya finishes whatever he has been doing on his phone, and tosses it gently to the bed beside him. He crosses the room to Shane, stands in front of him, squeezes into his shoulders with his big hands, rubbing them like he means to warm them up.
“Looks like we will have a little vacation,” he says, with a big obnoxious grin.
Boston and Montreal are sent to Paris to play against each other in an exhibition series in January 2017. Ilya and Shane decide to stay in Paris for one more night. Just one more night, so they can talk. Maybe finally understand each other.
They aren't expecting a volcano to erupt in Iceland and close all the airspace in Europe, leaving them stranded there. Together.

Shane snorts. “Not sure they will be able to get a head actually bigger than yours for that.” When Ilya gives a contemplative look towards his own crotch, Shane kicks him under the table. “You know what I mean.”
“I have Harris save you one.”
“I think I have enough random–”
“Take little Ilya with you everywhere.”
A little Ilya already goes everywhere with Shane. A “freshly” worn t-shirt from every visit that still smells enough like Ilya to get him through the days and weeks, a bruise on his hip, a whispered Russian phrase that won’t leave his brain.

Ilya feels his blood still in his veins. His vision almost immediately blurs at the sound of his mother’s name falling so gently from Shane’s lips. Shane rambles something, almost to himself, before:
“I’m Shane. Shane Hollander. And I’m in love with your son, Ilya.”
Ilya’s breath catches, heart lurching in his chest, fluttering almost painfully as the realization hits him: He’s introducing himself to her.
