Michael stepped forward. Yoichi watched every move he made, hands trembling. Michael stopped in front of him, noticing how the boy barely reached his shoulder.
“So you’re the one I’m marrying,” he muttered, tone sharp by reflex. “You’re smaller than I thought.”
Yoichi’s lower lip quivered, and he looked away, clearly trying not to let it show how much the words stung. An ugly sourness twisted in Michael’s gut. Why did he say that?
____To end a long standing feud between two royal houses, Yoichi is sent to marry the crown prince of the Kaiser family. Michael doesn’t want a spouse, especially not one who cries at dropped inkpots and can’t even ride a horse, but there’s something about Yoichi’s stubborn kindness that lingers like warmth in winter.

“Are you mad at me? I promise I’ll make it up to you, my rose.” He’s sure Yoichi can hear him, even if he doesn’t respond to Michael's cajoling, trying to get him to perk up like a scolded puppy. Yoichi’s been so skittish lately, quiet too, but Michael has just the cure for that right here in his arms, and he takes hold of the corner of their quilted blanket and pulls it back.
Yoichi flinches as he comes closer, but even that reflex is subdued, and the bags beneath his eyes make Michael frown. “You know how upset I get when you give me the cold shoulder.”

Rin’s brother was unperturbed. He continued to stare down at Isagi even as he responded in that calm, unruffled monotone of his, “For Rin’s lukewarm behaviour. I’ll understand if you want to go home.”
