    Summary

“King Baelor now,” Lyonel interrupted his thoughts, and now raised his glass in a toast and urged Dunk to do the same, wine sloshing from glass to glass, red droplets falling upon the table. “Long may he reign and whatnot. Was almost taken by the plague himself, last I heard. Baelor twice-dead they should call him– that blow to the head should’ve been the end of him! He never fully recovered, did you hear? That’s what the dissenters say. A cripple as a king.”

“He’s not crippled,” Dunk said, fiercely, putting his cup down hard on the table. The relief was heady enough to set his fingers trembling. “And he’ll be a great king. He’s a good man.”

    Summary

Dunk squeezed his eyes shut, his face burning. “Begging your pardon. I am not comely, your grace. You mock me.”

“You are mistaken on both counts," Baelor said softly, smiling. "In truth, I thought of little else after you left here. Little save this fresh-faced young knight, as big and strong as an oak, who seemed so eager to please me.”

    Summary

The poppy was growing stronger now. It was stealing everything away: his pain, his fear, his own tiresome web-weaving. Baelor drifts into the night, unmoored. A lovely comforting image resurfaces in his mind’s eye: a too-tall straw-haired man with storybook charm, stooped by a stone door. His guards and maesters flowing, to and fro, to and fro, black robes and white cloaks, back and forth from his chambers. It is a coursing river, with a seven-pointed star shining above and Baelor at its center. Oaken roots surround him; it is his knight, and he has grown roots all around his prince, thick and fast and sturdy forevermore.

What follows after Ashford: the growing plot of the Blackfyre Rebellions; the black dragon, the red dragon and the hedge knight.

    Summary

Baelor takes the hit from his brother's mace in the shoulder rather than the head. It isn't a fatal blow; it isn't a trifling matter, either.

(Several scenes from the aftermath of a slightly different Trial of Seven.)
