Merlin survived Camelot, magic bans, dragons, and several centuries of human stupidity only to get dragged back into wizarding chaos because of a haunted teacup and a screaming Albanian turnip.
Now he’s accidentally befriended Harry Potter, insulted Gilderoy Lockhart on sight, intimidated Lucius Malfoy without trying, and somehow agreed to teach History at Hogwarts.
Unfortunately for everyone involved, “Marlin Ambrosius” is very tired, deeply protective, and absolutely not getting emotionally attached to another disaster child.

Summary
Prince Arthur did not intend to bring Merlin on patrol, he didn’t even know his manservant could ride a horse. But he can’t say no to that grin, not when Merlin has gone and packed and saddled up a horse for himself without asking. It’s a dull, routine patrol along the border, almost a formality at this point. Even if magic is legal in Escetir, they’ve held a shaky peace treaty with Camelot for over a decade; it’s unlikely they’ll see any danger.
But what Arthur does not know is that the recent spike in deaths of magical creatures in Camelot has not gone unnoticed. There are whispers that King Uther is a liar and a hypocrite, now secretly rebuilding his magical defence. And to bring sorcery to the border - well now, that would be an act of aggression tantamount to declaring war.

"I'll have to remember for next month. Thank you for paying on time."
Despite actively being in a conversation in the present, Merlin's mind was still stuck in the past. "It's not a problem at all, my lord."
Arthur gave Merlin a questioning look. He rose an eyebrow in a way that reminded Merlin of Gaius. "Did you just address me as 'my lord'?"
OR
While waiting for Arthur's return, Merlin spent the last 1500 years wandering the world. One day, he decides to temporarily settle down in London again. What he was not expecting was to see a familiar looking prat be his landlord; and even worse, a prat with no memory of Camelot.

Summary
Merlin slips into the chainmail, remembers how Arthur once helped him put on his gloves in Ealdor when they were trying to protect his village from being sieged. His magic tingles under his skin, recently recovered after the Crystal Caves. He wonders if wearing this armor, the king’s spare armor, if he could be disguised when using magic to stop the fighting before there are more casualties. Maybe he could even convince Morgana and Mordred that he’s Arthur, and distract them while Arthur leads Camelot to victory elsewhere on the battlefield.
