Summary
Anakin Skywalker never fell in love with Padmé and resists the call to the Dark Side, killing Sidious after Mace Windu's arrest of the Sith Lord and Supreme Chancellor. Although Order 66 is never enacted, the Galaxy is still in a state of unrest after the death of the Chancellor. Padmé Amidala takes advantage of the power vacuum created, crowning herself Empress. She rules the Galaxy with former Sith Lord Maul by her side as her advisor, guard, and lover.
Each of these works can be read or independently in any order. They're sorted by in-universe chronological order but weren't written in that order (isn't it Star Wars tradition at this point to never do anything in the right order?) so you can totally jump around and pick and choose which parts to read.
