When the war ends, people pour out into the streets, hugging and kissing strangers in the wild euphoria of survivors. It must have been the same for them – completely different people, driven together by a series of terrible misfortunes. The misfortunes were over. Artemy assumed his rights as a Foreman, and a previously unknown grandeur appeared in the set of his shoulders, and a detached coldness in his eyes. It was as if he had returned to his pole, and Daniil... Daniil was stuck in his orbit, unable to draw closer or push further away.
