Some of them, on the other hand, involved reports of a large red devil, spotted sprawled out like an outsized lizard on various roof tops across the city.
For some reason, that last one was the easiest to deal with.
(And then there was the report of an armor clad giant lounging in one of the fountains outside the university library. She left that one for Dante.)

Every time Dante tears another hole through his red coat, he brings it to the same tailor to be mended. The coat keeps coming back and, eventually, so does he.

“You’re shaking.”
“I’ve been awake all night.”
“Because of the coat?”
“Don’t insult me.”
He lifted your hand to his chest, pressing your palm over the heartbeat waiting beneath the leather. “Still here.”
You warned him that he had better remain there, because you refused to perform another restoration before next month. Dante considered that a vote of confidence, and when you threatened to sew him into the coat, his smile tilted and he accused you of promising him a good time again.
“For the record,” he said, thumb following the pulse inside your wrist, “I didn’t go back because it’s a nice coat.”
“No?”
“Lots of nice coats in the world.”
“None you can afford.”
“Low blow.” His forehead lowered towards yours, mischief softening into something unguarded as the distance disappeared. “I went back ‘cause you made this one mine.”

Summary
If you're in some bad lighting and squint just enough, a Hellhound looks almost like a dog. That can make them hard to kill. At least, Nero thinks so. His father is much more concerned about having one in the house.
Set post-Icarus; helps to have read the main story first, but can be read standalone.

“Most do,” I admitted. “But at the same time, most demons do not believe in ‘family,’ or they do not know it as a concept. We’re a rare sort, Nero. Few demons feel anything in seeing death - whether that of human strangers or others of their kind.”
“I suppose this makes us better than them,” Vergil said as he reached up to brush the tears from Nero’s cheeks. “But it does make life more painful to care about others. You care a great deal, Nero. That’s… good, but that doesn’t mean we can look after demons who are likely to eat you. Unfortunately, they will not appreciate the effort.”
“Okay,” Nero huffed. “We can put it back outside, but I want a snake.”
Vergil’s temporary relief vanished as quickly as it had appeared. “You what?”
“Nonno said I got a dog if we put it back out, but I don’t want a dog. I want a snake, a really big one.”
“That’s not what he said!” I found myself once again pinned under a venomous glare from my son, so I went back to sipping my tea. “You’re not getting a snake, Nero.”
“Then I’m not putting the demon back outside.”
“Nero, this isn’t a bargain.”
“What about a lizard?”
“Well, you already have your father for that,” I noted. Nero realized the truth in my statement and nodded along just as a summoned sword smashed my teacup to pieces.

People were starting to get up as soon as the plane landed, eager to get their bags from the overhead. All the while, Nero’s still asleep, and Dante’s tapping his fingers on his knees.
Still seated, you bend down, reaching to grab something. Dante watches as you continue to look for whatever you can’t happen to find.
“What’s wrong? Did you lose something?” he asks, with half a smile, and a bit of concern.
“Yeah,” you breathe out, sitting back up, “I happened to lose my phone number, can I have yours?” you ask, handing him your phone so he can enter his number.
Dante’s mouth opens and closes, a bit appalled at your pick up line. In the end, he musters a small laugh, “Of course, sweetheart.”
The silver haired man doesn’t waste a second entering his number into your phone.

“Bones!” Nico shouted, from the down the hall. “Ain’t seen your skinny ass since the housewarming!”
“Always a pleasure, Nico. I’ve found the robe quite cozy.”
“You and Kyrie been baking again?” Nero’s voice. Same as always, but Vergil shifted in his chair. Did V come by to cook regularly? “Smells pretty good in here.”
“I was assisting with an early gift on someone else’s behalf. You can expect mine tomorrow.”
What?
“Cool. You actually manage to find any?”
What?
“And what, you kept it all that time for the suspense? Come on, V, where is it?”
“It’s a birthday gift,” V chuckled. “You get it on your birthday.”
“Speakin’ of gifts,” Nico interjected. “I got another fancy-lookin’ bottle if you’re still collectin’ em. S’in the van.”
“Excellent timing. Allow me to grab my things and I’ll take it with me. Nero, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
If V had been anyone else, the look Vergil gave him as he strolled back in the kitchen would have killed him instantly. Instead, he cracked that infuriating smirk and tossed his cane over his shoulder.
“Something wrong?”
“I believe,” Vergil whispered so harshly he could have made a tea kettle whistle. “This was supposed to be a competition! What happened to Nero being our son?!”
“He’s our son, but for me, I get to enjoy him as a friend as well. And since you could not combat me on even ground due to an unforeseen difference in our memory, I concede.”
“Are you even me?!” he hissed, rising from his chair and nearly climbing over the table. “We don’t concede!”
“I’m you,” V said with such an aura of self-satisfaction Vergil wanted to cut him on down principle. “But I think you’ll find I’m the part you never knew very well.”
With a wink and polite farewell to Kyrie, he left.

“Need water.” Nero waved the plastic cup around.
‘I had a nightmare.’
Nero didn’t say those last words aloud but they hung there nonetheless, patiently waiting to be acknowledged, comforted. The nozzle went on, off, then he tilted back half the glass.
“Water?” Vergil repeated.
‘How bad?’
“Yeah, water. What, is a guy not allowed to get a glass of water in his own house anymore?”
‘Really bad.’
Wordlessly, Vergil rose from his seat and trailed into the kitchen. He expected the way Nero eyed him warily, as he usually did, and cautiously pulled his hand through his son’s locks until they were smoothed back on his head. He pressed his lips to Nero’s forehead. To no one else did he share this softness and love, to no else did he bear his heart. Only Nero was privy to his soothing side for things such as nightmares and the desperate longing of serenity given by a parent.
“You know I’d never let anything bad happen to you.” Words that Vergil no longer had to search for or think about entered the kitchen, dousing them both in cool relief, sounding out of place to those who neither knew nor spoke their nonverbal language. 'You're under my protection.’
Nero’s face reddened all the way to the tips of his ears and he pawed at his nose.
Like a rose required nourishment and time to reveal it's true beauty, it had years for them to learn how to communicate so delicately and it required coming to terms with the stipulation that understanding needed work. They actually had to talk to each other, not scream or throw tantrums or hiss passive-aggressively underneath their breaths or lock themselves away and wait for the other to understand.
In one such instance, Nero had been antagonized over Vergil keeping the Yamato away from him and the obstinate refusal to explain that the weapon was dangerous and fragile and held sentimentality that Vergil thought unexplainable to a child ended with them both falling to pieces while Vergil worked desperately in a horror ridden state to stop the bleeding. Yamato, in the proverbial sense, had been more than ecstatic to engage with her master's successor. The first fire of a scolding licked Vergil's tongue only to be drowned underneath Nero bursting into tears. Suddenly, Vergil felt more like his father than he ever had in his life. He was Sparda and Nero was him when he was a child, fresh off the training grounds after his first experience with his beloved katana.
That night had changed the way Vergil connected with Nero and vice versa. Slowly but surely, they worked their way upwards until they could hear when things weren't voiced and know that when one thing was said, there was always something unstated tacked onto it.
“I’m okay, old man.”
'I know. Thank you.’

“Grandpa,” repeated the older kid, now sensing chaos and fully embracing it.
Dante wheezed. “I’m not ready to be a brother to a grandpa.”
Vergil’s eye twitched.
“I am not old,” Vergil said, voice like crushed glass. “I transcend mortal time.”
“Yeah, and now you transcend into the grandpa zone,” Dante cackled. “Should I get you a cane? A sweater vest? Oh my god, should we teach you how to knit? ”
“I will end you,” Vergil hissed.
“ With a pocket full of Werther’s Originals? ” Dante doubled over laughing

Bookmarker's Notes
"Why not? S'not like I feel the cold."
Neither of them had ever been particularly sensitive to temperature changes and as children, they would run out in shorts even on the coldest winter days, to their mother's greatest dismay, but Dante's wellbeing was quite beside the point here.
"I aspire to be as conspicuous as possible in public areas, and your prancing around bare-chested is certain to draw undue attention to ourselves. Furthermore… we both know Nero learns by example, and he's already been sick once this season." Vergil knelt down, searching through their shopping bags for the last turtleneck. Once he'd found it, he stood straight back up, snapping it open for Dante to see. "Put this on, at least. I have spare gloves."
"That's a turtleneck, bro," Dante stated with a quick laugh and widening grin. "Ya don't expect me to…" He trailed off, his gaze settling on Vergil's own neck and sweeping up his outfit. "Wait. Why d'ya have a matchin' one? Did you…"
It had been an impulsive decision, born from amusement at the coincidence of these existing, but Vergil had not given thought to Dante's reaction upon being asked to wear his part of the set. Thus, he was entirely unprepared for the disbelief in his tone or the gentleness coating it. Vergil cleared his throat, his cheeks burning and no doubt creeping towards a colour to match Dante's gift.
"They were a set, and, well…" He sniffed and tilted his chin up, fighting off his embarrassment at being caught making such a pointless and sentimental decision. "Unzip Nero's suit."
Dante couldn't get it to go down with one hand, so he set Nero down to pull the zipper to his waist. His eyes widened as they caught the third turtleneck and he gasped. "There's three. Like--like we’re a tiny…"
He didn't finish the thought. In one fluid movement, he was standing again, positively pouncing on Vergil to snatch the turtleneck out of his hands before wrapping him in a sudden, tight hug. Vergil froze, arms still extended, his entire body tense under Dante's embrace, his mind entirely unconvinced this happening at all. He could not remember the last time this had happened. To think it was over a turtleneck , of all things! He cleared his throat, and the small sound seemed to snap Dante out of his strange mood; he withdrew, hands trailing on Vergil's shoulders, blue eyes a little too shiny.
"Are you quite all right, Dante?" Despite his best efforts to keep his tone cool and snide, a measure of roughness slid into it. He had to admit, he was quite shaken by this sudden show of gratitude.
Dante laughed, his smile wet but honest. "Must be the early hour or som'thing! Anyway, huh?" Dante removed his hands from Vergil's shoulders, whose chest tightened as soon as their warmth was gone. "Gonna go put the family turtleneck on!"
