It’s been a long day- a long week. Trying to balance the needs of VoxTek and Al’s hotel project have taken their toll, and Vox would be lying if he said he didn’t feel in need of a lengthy nap (that possibly also spans seven years, but he’s not cruel enough to say that to Al, even as a joke) so he’s here, instead, because of curiosity over Hell’s elusive king, and loyalty to Alastor (that Val will call misplaced until Vox tells him to shut the fuck up for what feels like the seventieth time)
He’s not impressed so far.

Alastor glances over as Vox turns a corner without indicating. “If you truly detest parties, dear, then you could stay home.”
It’s a little flat, and there’s that old stab of worry in Vox’s chest that he’s said or done something wrong without realising he has. It’s not like they don’t piss each other off on the regular. There’s been the whole initial rivalry when they’d first met- the mockery, the sneering. (Until they realised that they were perhaps feeling other things than hatred. Then they’d traded blood and pain for drinks and careful steps forwards. The marriage contract had been a headache. Overlords of their caliber didn’t just give shit away. There were always strings attached. They found a loophole, like always, and Vox still remembers getting it witnessed by Carmilla and Zestial, the only promises made being “no one else gets to kill you.”
Romantic enough, sure.)

"Are you alright?" He asks, his voice deceptively steady. Apo can hear how his pace quickens. His heart pounds endlessly against his ribs, like a rabbit caught in a trap. It draws Apo in like a siren's call.
Skin tears as Apo curls her hand into a fist. She digs her claws in as deep as she can manage, the pain keeping her grounded. This is the middle of town, she reminds herself. Keep it together.
