He slowed down as he stared at the backs of the rest of the paladins. None of them notice that he stopped following. Lance always chased after him, them. Falling and failing to keep up, yet he always got back up. He always got back up, but not this time. This time Lance chooses to stay down.
After the final battle against Haggar, the war was finally won. Parades were held across the universe to celebrate, but the work of a Paladin never ends. As the remaining Paladins return to the Altean Colony, they come across information that puts together what really happened to Lance and maybe find a way to save him.

Keith sighs, “No.”
It’s what he expected; it’s common knowledge that anyone who falls into those pockets never returns. Yet that has not stopped Keith from searching, and well, hope is a fickle thing. Lance places his head against Keith’s sweaty shoulder, rubbing a comforting hand on his back.“But,” Keith hesitates, biting his lip, “We found something.”
Keith’s suddenly tense, contemplating whether he should say what they found. As Head Knight, there are certain things he is sworn to keep secret, but Keith’s never been good at keeping secrets from Lance. He looks up, surveying the area around them- nothing but grass and trees surrounds them.“A mage,” Keith whispers.

Or, Lance is a mage in hiding, happily married to Keith, who is unaware that Lance is a mage. After 10,000 years, a familiar face returns, apparently with the knowledge to restore the world to its balanced state. Now Lance is forced to choose between his duty and Keith. Unfortunately, his decision makes him the direct enemy of his husband. Will love conquer all, or was none of it meant to last? -

Lance gave him a smile, which was probably meant to look reassuring, but instead it looked more like a grimace.
And the words spilled from his mouth like they were overflowing from within him, “I love you.”
Lance’s eyes opened wide in shock, and he removed his hand as if burned. His eyes darted away, and Keith turned to look at him. Lance looked completely taken aback, lost on what to say or do. Keith watched the shock play out on his face. He watched Lance’s throat bob as he swallowed and then opened his mouth to speak.

Lance's husband did not sleep in bed with him. He did not take his breakfast with Lance, he did not use their shared bathroom, or drink from the tea sets gifted to them for their wedding. Lance's new husband seemed like smoke, leaving just the faintest traces of himself behind; the smell of sweat in the little sitting area, a misplaced boot left by the doors to their wing of the castle, his voice coming up to Lance through the window as he trains in the grounds.

Alternatively, Prince Lance marries the Commander of the Guard, Keith. Despite being the one who wanted the marriage, Keith seems to not want Lance at all.

“So wait, does that mean Bob is real?” Lance laughed, almost delirious, “That was real”
He tried to rationalise this. He tried his best - the best he could -, but he was grasping at straws. Keith had voted for him to be let go- Keith had wanted him to be free - okay, whatever, he couldn’t exactly feel flattered by that, when Keith only wanted Lance to go free so he didn’t have to be around him.
Lance had long since accepted that nothing like that would ever happen between them. It was honestly a fact of life at this point. Lance was annoying, Lance was obnoxious, Lance was loud - immature, arrogant, confrontational, anything else you can name, that was probably him.
But Lance had liked becoming friends with him. At least Lance thought they were friends. Now he wasn’t so sure.
They were friends, right?

Summary
The air is thinning around him; breathing getting a bit harder to do as Lance grabs at his head.
He must be going crazy, he must be.
Everyone gathers around him, each voicing their worry in different tones or touches, but there is only one thing Lance can focus on, and that is Keith, who stands right in front of him.
He looks worried, and the blue paladin catches him peeking at his right eye multiple times—the pink one, the infected one.
And right above Keith’s shoulder, he sees the other Keith—the fake one?—pick up his pacing again, teeth scratching at his lips with worry and discomfort, a hand buried deeply into his dark hair.
Lance takes in a deep, deep breath. Blinks, and buries his face into his hands again.
Because holy fucking shit.
He can see two Keiths.
Or; after an allience mission goes horribly wrong, Lance somehow ends up being able to see a second Keith roam the castle-ship's halls—one that constantly seems to follow him around, always with that same sad expression on his face.
Lance has to fix this. But how?
