Summary
Leo’s spent the rest of the day leaning up against Donnie, half watching him over his shoulder as he plays Skyrim on silent on their switch, whilst he doodles away in his sketchpad, all scribbles and pointless wobbly lines that connect to nothing, he starts drawing a slow, thick edged circle when he asks in a small voice,
“Don? You think that maybe… Raph is uh, what did you call it? Neurodivergent?”
Donnie doesn’t answer him right away – he appears to be caught up in a bit of a tricky spot with a dragon. He pauses the game and looks up.
“Why’d you ask?”
Leo shrugs, he brings his pencil around to trace over the circle he’s already drawn.
“Him and Mikey just seem so at odds at each other,” he muses. “You said it’s a spectrum, so maybe they’re just at opposite ends.”
Donnie hums, mulling over his words, he drops the switch in his lap, peering over at Leo’s work.
“Could be,” he says, finally giving him an answer. “And I did say it was most likely hereditary.”
Hereditary. As in he could have it. As could Donnie. It could be there in his brain too. Something unplugged, unconnected. Something that didn’t feel complete.

Leo, too busy taking in the wonderful cheers of New York, barely catches the signs. Barely. He’s the oldest, he’s able to figure out his brothers and know their quirks. So when Mikey’s too quiet and Raph’s slowing down… he knows something it wrong.
And then he spots the spider-web-like crack dancing up Mikey’s shell.
Or: Mutant Mayhem missing scene! The boys’ shells were cracked. Let’s address that.

They’re twelve years old, and the world above is still very much a fleeting dream, but that’s never stopped them before. As night falls overhead, Raph sneaks away from their home and out the nearest manhole cover, pulling Mikey along by the arm.
Both brothers emerge out of the shadows and into the bright and alien world of humanity, gazing wide-eyed and in awe at the starry night sky.
