Summary
“We brought something.” Margaret said as she got up and went to the living room, coming back with a bag of some kind. She got a box out, wiped a few tears away, before setting it reverently on the table. It was a wooden box a lot like Maddie had. Daniel’s name was carved on the top in an intricate pattern. “This was the box we made for him.” Buck just stared uncomprehendingly at it. The box on the table was Daniel’s baby box. The keepsake they made for their son. Something showing how much they loved him. Like they loved Maddie. Like they obviously didn’t love Buck.
“I don’t …” Buck cleared his throat and shook his head, trying to breathe so he wouldn’t cry.
“This? This is bullshit. You need to go.” Eddie stated, standing up and putting a firm hand on Buck’s shoulder. “You think the way to show Buck that you actually care about him as your son is to bring in the keepsake box you made for Daniel? When you openly admitted to never making one for him? Buck, go to the room.” Buck swallowed thickly and stood up, Eddie’s hand sliding from his shoulder to his back.
“I’m sorry.” Buck whispered, meeting Eddie’s eyes. Eddie’s face went soft.

Summary
After the tsunami, Buck gets offered a once in a lifetime opportunity. He hadn't told anyone at the 118, nor his sister, that he finished out some college classes and earned a few degrees. He'd done them on a whim, anyway. Deciding to use his hyperfixations for something constructive at Chris' insistence. Pepa and Abuela offer support since they basically adopted him into their family, regardless of what Eddie was or wasn't doing.
Which is how he ends up going to England for most of a year and following the trail of the legend of King Arthur in search of the origination of the story from oral traditions. With only a few people in on the secret. Granted, he's not sure if Chim will be able to make it very long, but he's happy to give him the chance.

Summary
Buck chooses to have a conversation with his parents when he's cleared from the hospital. He also chooses to have Bobby nearby as his chosen parental support. His parents somehow were let into the firehouse, there to have a conversation with him that he had purposely been avoiding while he worked through what had all happened, so if it was happening anyway, he was going to get what he could off his chest.
Even if that meant telling them he was cutting them out of his sister's life for her. He couldn't actually do that, and Maddie would only laugh at him for saying as much, but they knew how protective Maddie was over him and would probably see it as a legitimate threat.

Summary
“What happened to a united front?” She asked, getting emotional. It wasn’t her fault she was emotional right now, she had an insane amount of hormones running through her body.
“You tell me.” Buck finally turned and looked at her. “You never told me you were getting so close to them again. I had no idea you were talking to them frequently enough to be able to invite them out, let alone that they would actually agree. You told me when you first got here not to tell them you were here, and you have never asked anything about our relationship since then.”
“What’s there to tell?” Maddie huffed, getting to her feet and walking over to him. “Seriously, you accepted me so easily, why would they be any different?”
“What’s our motto?” Buck asked quietly.
“What’s that-”
“They aren’t bad people, just bad parents.” Buck said, cutting her off. “Or did you only ever say that for my benefit?”
“Buck.” Maddie said his name sadly. “Please.”
“No.” Buck said, shaking his head again. “No, and if that’s all you wanted to talk to me about you should go.”
OR
When Maddie tries to get Buck to agree to see their parents while she's pregnant, he says no.

Summary
“Look, it’s not that I’m not … grateful to see you again, Mads,” Buck said hesitantly, after his sister was dressed and they were sitting down on the sofa together, “but, uh, what exactly brought you here? Not LA, um, I mean why did you come to me specifically?”
“Do I need an excuse to see my baby brother now?” She asked a little defensively.
“Considering we haven’t seen each other in person in seven years, or talked on the phone in at least three, you need something better than you don’t care where your shitty husband is.” Buck stated.
“If it’s that big of a deal, I’ll go.” Maddie huffed.
OR
When Maddie arrives in LA, into Buck's apartment, they have a very different conversation about divorce, protective orders, and new relationships.
