Summary
Castiel’s goodbye was emotional and tragically unrequired. But now it’s Dean’s turn to talk.
Dean’s been in heaven for a few months. When he runs into his best friend for the first time, he’s frustrated and angry, but also extremely relieved. His insecurities make him veil his feelings into a bitey, stealthy, messy research on his angel's emotions. Unfortunately Cas is still too ashamed and oblivious to ease Dean’s probing, so they end up dancing around each other.
Don’t get your hopes up, besides the initial descriptive logorrhea, it’s basically a very long dialogue between two lovers in spe. Or rather Dean’s monologue with Castiel’s brief interjections. Well, our angel had tons of lines back in canon, so.
It’s the missing filler scene from the last episode, placed several months after Dean checked in to heaven and years before Sam’s death.
The only trigger warning: it’s painfully exhausting and you may feel groggy.
Fun fact: the talk would take up an entire episode.

Unfortunately, Dean is Dean, and you can't spell "denial" without the letters D-E-A-N.
"What? I can't call you 'buddy' anymore?" Dean asks a little sassily.
It’s easier to act like the angel is being emotional for no reason, rather than to face his own emotions that he’s been far too afraid to confront ever since the speech he received in the dungeon.
(TLDR: Dean is in denial after Cas's confession, gets jealous, then realizes that "friends" prob don't get jealous over their buddy banging another guy. Then they freak! Lol)

“Dean, we’ve done enough,” Cas says quietly. “We’ve given enough. We can be done now. Don’t you think, after everything we’ve sacrificed—everything we’ve lost—that we deserve to rest?”
Dean’s so stunned that, for a moment, he doesn’t even know what to say.
“I’m not going to stop hunting,” Dean says slowly. “And it ain’t about how much we’ve done—I’m a hunter, Cas. It’s who I am. Why the hell would I retire now?”OR
Post-finale, after Dean rescues Cas from the Empty, they settle back into hunting as friends. Dean does everything he can to convince himself that this is the life he wants—this is the only life he deserves.
Like every lie Dean tells himself, it all comes apart in the end.

“It was always going to be you, and Cas knew it. He was dead from the moment he met you.”
Dean swallowed thickly but he refused to break Gabe’s gaze.
“You never cared about him,” Gabe spat. “You only cared about what he could do for you! And you know what? He knew it but he did it anyway! He deserved so much better than you.”
“No,” Dean whispered. “No, you don’t get to do that.”
Dean shoved against Gabe hard and he stumbled back a step with the force of it. Dean could feel tears stinging his eyes but he refused to cry like this.
“You don’t get to tell me how I felt about Cas! Don’t you for one second believe I loved him any less than you did! Hell, I loved him more! More than anyone! I would’ve done anything for him!”Dean is grieving and Gabriel just wants his brother back. With Jack gone, Sam's just trying to hold onto the little family he has left. Even when Cas returns from the dead, with Jack by his side, things don't just magically become okay again. It seems they may all have some truths they need to confess to.
