Luffy trips and falls and it's all Ace's fault because he had turned around, because he had listened to that mutt, because he hadn't followed Sabo's pleas who had managed to spring faster ahead from them, who was turning back round to run to them, but it would be too late, fragments of a second too late and the fire logia can't help himself from smiling bitterly, remembering what Gramps had once told him.

Maybe he was more like him that he had ever realized. More like him than he had wanted. It doesn't matter because Luffy is down and Ace runs.

Your plan is to keep this up and, four years down the road, leave with a certain Straw Hat Pirate crew that is scheduled to make an appearance during a large-scale raid!

Summary
Shanks loved Luffy the moment he met him. Despite that he had to leave him in Dawn but nothing prepared him to suddenly become a father to Luffy and several other kids. He wouldn't trade it for the world.
