Perhaps it’s an inevitable juncture of the hero’s story: the fateful moment when they are brought to their knees that will mark the separation of who they were before and who they must become after, if there is to be an after; the bitter moment of recognition that all their choices have led them here and no one is coming to help. And it’s one thing to go looking for blood and another altogether to be delivered into the merciless hands of the hunters, stripped and shorn of fight.
There is something unbearably beautiful in the reluctant yielding of his body: the uncurling of his hands, the tilt of his head thrown back and the naked bewilderment of his unfocused eyes. Red looks the way saints are portrayed in the final moments of their martyrdom, blood like holy oil anointing his lips, his throat. Trailing down and across his skin.

This is such a good fic! What I especially love about it is how human everyone feels; like the story would be slightly different if we were shown a different POV (which we see a glimpse of in the final chapter). Merlin’s POV is so well written, and I really like the OC’s in this. 10/10, will read again and again and again

"...what?" Arthur asked blearily as the boy set down his food. Merlin didn't even pause as he went to the dresser and tossed some more clothes out of the cabinet. "You... You have an apprentice?" He repeated and squinted. "Why?"
"Oh, you know," Merlin shrugged, tossing a tunic on the bed "In case I die or something." He said. The boy blinked before glancing over at Merlin with pursed lips.
"You're not dying, are you?" He asked and Arthur had to shake his head to try and keep up with the conversation.
"I don't think so... But you can never be certain." Merlin told him with an air of stoicism. Arthur scowled. Honestly. This was ridiculous. Clearly, this was his servant's newest attempt to get out of work (or at least work less).
"Merlin, you're not getting an apprentice." Arthur told him. Merlin stopped to look at the king.
"I am. I have. He's right there. Say hi, Daegal."
"Hi!"
Or
Daegal lives. Merlin takes him on as an apprentice. Arthur isn't sure what's going on. Mordred is also mad for some reason.
