"Dice, spider?" she said with steadily amounting glee. Lace could never stoop to mortal vices, but that didn't mean she was completely ignorant. "How many could have guessed that Pharloom's illustrious saviour had a penchant for gambling?"
"I won them from a pilgrim during my ascent to the Citadel," Hornet said stiffly. It wasn't lost on Lace that she denied nothing about gambling. "They were of surprising utility."
What service they could have possibly provided her, Lace couldn't begin to fathom. Hornet was preternaturally lucky enough as it was. She rolled them in her palm, testing their heft. They were entertaining things to fidget with. She'd pull one an inch or so away from the cluster just to be able to feel it struggling to rejoin its comrades. The magnetic tension conveyed a want that went beyond speech. The inanimate could only ever experience a single form of desire; the type that was born when it lost a part of itself. For them, love and loss were one and the same.
Hornet and Lace embark on a pilgrimage.
