Glassy black eyes gaze back at him, peering out curiously from a furry orange face. Armand lets go of her--of it--like he's been burned, holding his hands firmly in his lap.

Daniel was concentrating so hard at pretending to read his notes, the next time the train jolted on the tracks he barely noticed the way his hand let go of the handrail (suspiciously sudden, he had been gripping very tightly) and he stumbled forward, tripping over Armand's shoes and falling backwards directly into his lap.

Summary
It wasn't fascinating, the way the boy didn't know whether to lean into the touch or away from it, confused by the comfort and the pain it offered in equal measures. It wasn't. Armand could do the same thing — did do the same thing, whenever Louis deigned to touch him at all — and Louis still thought he was boring. It couldn't be this that had captivated him.
But that didn't mean it wasn't fun.

Finally, Daniel sank into the couch and drew a blanket up over his legs. Switched on the TV to a random program and pretended to be absorbed in it, as if he wasn’t vibrating with nerves at the thought of Armand’s arrival. He curled into a ball, digging himself deeper under the blanket, and tried to quiet his thoughts, take them somewhere nicer. It didn’t work. Not really. Every other thought was intermixed with images of the dirty bathroom, of the water in the sink, the feeling of hands pinning his arms behind him. Daniel shook his head like he could physically clear the thoughts. He trained his eyes on the TV, curled his knees up to his chest, and waited for the sun to set.
OR: An old friend from Daniel's past comes to visit him in New York. When things turn violent, Daniel escapes and attempts to hide the truth from Armand while dealing with the aftermath of the attempted assault.

The instinctual flash of fear rooted Daniel to his seat but he managed to breath through the worst of it. ‘What made you change your mind?’
‘You did,’ Armand said with quiet eagerness. ‘That boy in San Francisco, the one I kicked into a bloody mess on a hotel floor, he wanted so desperately to live. Nothing could get him down, and yet here I find you, merely a year later, at the end of your rope.’
OR: Daniel has hit rock bottom during the winter of 1974. Armand accidentally makes things worse before they get better.
