Steve blinks. “What?”
Natasha rakes her gaze over him like she’s peeling back skin; like she can see something he doesn’t know how to hide. “You’re pretty calm about dying, Rogers,” she says. “What was it you said back there?”
“You get killed,” he hears himself say, “walk it off.”
“I’ve always been pretty calm about it. They told me that back in the Commandos too. Surely, you understand.” He’s read her file. He knows where she’s coming from.
“Death never comes naturally, Rogers.” She narrows her eyes. “Not even to me.”
“It helps me to pretend like it does.”
“Don’t you dare get used to it, Captain,” she tells him. “It won’t do you any favours. Trust me.”
Steve just nods. “I understand,” he lies.
