"I brought you boba." she murmurs. "Who brings boba for someone they're about to abandon?"
Rumi grimaces "You know those videos of dogs about to be put down that get a hamburger and ice cream before-"
Zoey feels a violent heat behind her eyes, and her hand tugs at Rumi's hair hard enough to get her attention. "Do NOT finish that thought." she says, silencing the conversation abruptly.

Summary
Her head is swimming. Falling and rising in equal measure. Tumbling down into the endless abyss and somehow simultaneously soaring higher than it ever has. Her pulse is a drumroll, thrumming thorugh her blood, through her bones, her nerves, her synapses, her very soul. She's never felt so alive, and yet somehow also so pliant.
Above her, Mira's eyes are wide. Pupils blown out like twin black holes, eclipsing the irises almost entirely.
"Oh," she whispers, "Fuck."
"Yeah," Zoey breathes, somewhere behind her. Rumi can't see her, but feels the weight of her against her spine. "Fuck indeed."

Summary
Rumi wraps Mira's hands around the delicate skin of her own throat.
Shaking thumbs press onto cheekbones. Fingers comb into the hair at the base of Rumi's skull. The side of her index lies against the shell of an ear.
Rumi doesn't stop looking at her.
"Prove it," she challenges softly. Pressing further into Mira's sweaty palms. "Prove you were willing to kill me."
Her arms both feel like they're about to give out. Unable to hold. Let alone squeeze; maim; or do anything other than this.
"Don't ask that of me," Mira nearly hisses in a whisper. Voice sharp around a sob.
"You said you tried to kill me," Rumi says softly. Smiling at her in a way that reminds her of a new flower. All rolled up and delicate. Easily broken. "I want you to prove it."

At least Mira doesn’t outright laugh at her, though amusement shines clearly in her eyes, in the small curve of her lips. “Dinner last night, our plans for today, which dinosaur was our favorite growing up,” she starts to list and Rumi groans.
“No, none of that,” she says, trying to keep her voice from a whine. “About, you know. Dating.”

"So, Rumi," Zoey's mother begins, so sweet and benign and unaware of the massive headache she was about to gracefully bestow upon Rumi. "Are you seeing anyone?"
It's an innocent question. Just one of those things that parents ask their daughter's friends. She asks it while Rumi helps herself to a delectable serving of galbi jjim, piling cuts of the meat onto her plate, and Rumi almost fumbles her chopsticks and drops a piece.
It's just a yes or no question.
Rumi, however, stops and very eloquently says: "Um."
OR: When Zoey's cousin invites all three of them to California for his wedding, Zoey is forced to navigate her and Rumi's newly-found feelings for each other while staying at her parents' house for four days. Zoey's trying not to explode, Rumi is an awkward, blushing mess, and Mira thinks it's the funniest shit ever. Mira didn’t let her finish.
The words tangled in her chest, sharp and panicked. She could already hear it—Jinu this, Jinu that. Some request for help picking something romantic. Advice she absolutely did not want to give—at least, not without a solid week to prepare herself. The idea of sitting there, nodding along while Rumi talked about her boyfriend, made something twist painfully in her chest.
“I’m so sorry.” Mira blurted, already shoving her chair back with an uncomfortable scrape. “I… I didn’t realize how late it was. I really have to go.”
