Rowan laughs. "I will. I promise. It's just the Fathers' Woods."
When he finally gets her off, the old waitress of the roadside diner returns with his card, hesitating before handing it over.
"Rowan," she says with an odd tone in her voice as she eyes him. "Young man like you shouldn't go into the Fathers' Woods."
He smiles at her. "I'm an experienced hiker and outdoorsman," he assures. "Do you know why they're called that? I keep asking, but no one knows."
Faded eyes go sad, and she says, "They say you can see men in the trees."
Taking his card, Rowan gathers his pack as he stands to go, that creepy anecdote making him sorry he asked. "Thanks. I'll be careful."
As he slips out the door, he thinks he hears her say, "That's what my Briar said."
