His shoulder screamed every time he shifted gears, something definitely wrong with the joint after the truck had rolled twice before slamming into that ditch. But he kept driving, kept pushing through the haze of pain and exhaustion because he couldn't stop. Not here. Most days, he couldn’t even remember how bad things got back then. But Langdon saw a glimpse of its ugliness when Robby confronted him about the inconsistencies in his drug administration. Langdon had forgotten about the pain, the fear, the desperation, and the humiliation he use to feel. But he felt everything now, all at once.

It comes out of her mouth like a question. She’s out of her element, unsure of the protocols in a place like this, and it’s strange to use Langdon’s first name. She’s only ever referred to Langdon as ‘Langdon’.
(And once, when she was slightly tipsy and pissed off and his name was beyond her grasp, ‘that skinny little rat man’.)
