Hiccup doesn't need to see the blood to know he's dying.
It seeps hot through the rent in his leather, between the open splay of his fingers, pulsing in rhythm with the ragged heartbeat that still clings to him out of habit rather than hope. The snow around him melts into a shaky scarlet halo, steaming in the bitter wind, and the world above tilts and blurs. He can taste iron on his tongue and ash in his lungs.
