There’s half a skull with protruding horns on his head, and bones and teeth and leathers and swathes of fur and warpaint over the rest of him, but it isn’t his savage-looking armor that’s causing the thrill hammering in her ribcage.
It isn’t even the way their bodies are quashed together in the insufferable Faronian heat, chests heaving, as he presses her into the tree bark, shielding her as best he can from the onslaught of wild animals rushing past them in an absolute fury.
It’s the look he’s giving her out of the corner of his cutting blue eyes, half-feral, half-incredulous, as if to ask, How is it that you keep getting yourself into so much trouble, and I’m always having to drop everything to come and save you?

The cold hits them the moment the restaurant door swings shut. One second, Trinity is laughing, her breath warm in her chest, growing into a bubble of happiness she's keeping unexamined. The next, winter is clawing its way under her coat and down through the gap where her scarf isn't tucked in properly. “Exhaustion,” Garcia finishes for her, then Santos feels two familiar hands scoop up one of her own and begin to gently massage her fingers and palm. “Trinity, if you can feel me, squeeze my hand.”
Santos swears it takes about as long as her commute to work, but she manages to find her shoulder and then her elbow and then her wrist and then the part of her that Garcia’s holding, and somehow convinces her fingers to curl slowly inward.
There’s an audible sigh of relief alongside the continued warmth enveloping her knuckles.
“Give me twenty minutes,” Garcia says, then leans down close enough that Santos can feel hot breath around her ear. “I’m gonna bring you somewhere quiet, okay?”

Dr. Choi, however, is apparently immune. She puts one hand on her waist and looks up at Rumi with a glare. She holds Rumi's client file up with her other.
"Rumi-nim, respectfully, this is the worst intake form I've ever seen in my life. "
Mira holds back a snicker.
