Summary
Nimona usually loves errands.
Crowded streets mean snacks, chaos, and endless opportunities to annoy Ballister and Ambrosius in public. But after a sleepless night leaves her shapeshifting restless and unpredictable, a shopping trip goes sideways when one rude stranger pushes too hard, and Nimona bares her teeth before she can stop herself.
Ambrosius handles the argument. Ballister handles the aftermath.
Turns out being part of a family means someone stays, even on the difficult days.

(Or: Bal and Ambrosius's first meeting through to after the wall comes down, one love language at a time.)
‘Try gripping it more like—here,’ Ambrosius says, and sheathes his own sword, taking a step closer.
Bal’s about to protest that he’s fine, he doesn’t need help. But Ambrosius’s fingers hover above his on the sword’s hilt, and when he asks, ‘May I?’ suddenly the last thing Bal wants is to tell him no.
He feels so acutely aware of the gentle fingers on his as they adjust his grip carefully on the handle. No one’s ever really been gentle or careful with him before, so he doesn’t know if it’s always like this, like there’s shimmery warmth dancing between them, little pinpoints of electricity everywhere Ambrosius’s fingertips touch his skin.

The streets are a jungle, and Nimona knows.
She knows this better than every homeless family, every thief, every gunman, everyone. She's been wandering trough wild cities for a thousand years, and she's a perfect mix of all the bad things of a city, all in one little, dangerous body.
In every city she steps in, the same endless circle repeats: she walks, she steals, she kills if she wants to, someone tries to kill her because of her powers, and because of her actions, which Nimona knows are horrible, but those always seem less important. It's always been so so common it became almost boring.Or: Nimona's life after ending the Institution, her thoughts, and her meeting with Ballister

I should've known."O-kay..." She began. "Well, it was great seeing you, boss." The teen tried to turn on her heel, disappointment burning in her chest, but was stopped when strong arms wrapped around her tense frame. She froze.
"Don't ever do that again." Was all he said, and all it took for Nimonas eyes to fill with tears.

They bump into each other, standing in their pajamas in front of the workbench and trying to one-up each other with increasingly ridiculous arm-related puns; Maelle follows Gustave’s instructions, holding together the pieces of the weird contraption he is making, and hands him the tools from time to time.
Her hands are still shaking — so much that she barely avoids dropping a box of some little bolts, almost sending them scattering on the floor.
Gustave doesn’t seem to notice.
The shaking goes away, little by little.
Or: Maelle slowly starts to believe that this family might be not as temporary as all the others.

“I know you’re not a girl,” replies Ballister, because she’s repeated it roughly two hundred fifty times. “But there’s no other way. Nobody knows you’re alive, and this is for the best.”
Or: Ballister thinks Nimona should go back to school as a way to avoid suspicion. Chaos ensues.

“You’re work over the past few weeks has been disappointing, to say the least.” She said, and Ambrosius tried not to flinch. The last thing he wanted was to disappoint the Director. “I expect you to remedy this.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“You’ll be working to perfect the most recent move set for the next few days.” She commanded. “You won’t rest until it’s perfect.”
“Yes, ma’am.” He nodded, his heart settling in his stomach at the thought of another set of sleepless nights. Maybe, if he could just get this done within the night, he wouldn’t have to stay up for any longer than that. Maybe he could get it right sooner than usual. “I won’t let you down.”
