Summary
After her brother’s death and a fall that leaves more than bones broken, Galadriel Noldor is sent across the world with her mare, Lothlórien, to a Texas ranch with a name people still speak carefully: Utumno Ranch. Its owner, Halbrand Kementari, is a man made of silence, dust, and old grief. Once, he and his wife built the ranch as a refuge for wounded souls. She clenched her jaw, knowing the truth would have to be shared. “During my pursuit of Adar, he released a weapon of some kind upon me. A powder-like poison.”
Halbrand’s shoulders grew tense. “Have you seen a healer?”
Galadriel only nodded. “It is a poison not of the traditional kind. It was not deadly. However, its effect lingers strongly.” A shiver ran down her spine and along her arms. “Bronwyn said the substance he inflicted upon me was something akin to an agitant. It raises one’s heart rate, heightens one’s senses.” She swallowed thickly at the next words forming on her tongue. “Reduces one’s control of impulses or desires.”
At that revelation, Halbrand sighed. He glanced at the table. “Why are you telling me this?”
She closed her eyes, trying to concentrate despite the distraction of the lowered cadence of his voice. “I cannot find rest in this condition. Yet, the only remedy I seek led me here.” Galadriel forced her gaze back towards him. She could not fight the heat crawling up her neck and sinking to her belly. “I believe that you can provide it.”
