“Of course I do,” she says, her pink lips curving into a smile. It takes a concerning amount of effort for him to tear his gaze away from her pretty mouth, settling it elsewhere as she fondly recalls, “you used to call Laurel your girlfriend. You were adorable back then.”
“And now?”
The words spill out before he even registers they’ve left him. Talking to her feels strangely like an out of body experience, like he’s watching the conversation unfold from somewhere just outside himself.
For a moment, she mulls over his question, her smile widening with her answer sitting just behind her teeth.
An AU where Susannah is still sick and Laurel enlists some extra support to help out around the summerhouse. Conrad, angry and preemptively grieving, doesn’t care. (Really, he doesn’t.)
