I honestly can’t remember how many of my scars I got from Cassidy. Can’t really remember where I got most of them anymore, but I guess that’s natural given how long I’ve been at this. I used to take such pride in them, used to count each new one after every battle, tell stories of how I got them to lovers, fellow mercenaries, anyone who listened.
I’ve never told stories about the scars I got from Cass. But I remember getting them. The big ones, at least.

One night Molly walked in on Will sitting in their living room. The bottle of whiskey that had sat unopened in the pantry for weeks was half empty, a glass curled in his hand as it rested on the side table. He was splayed across the armchair, almost sliding off, legs stretched and heels digging into the carpet. His expression was blank, dead eyed. He didn’t react to her presence.
There was music playing softly from his phone; she recognized the lyrics as the chorus began:

Now, in this strange point of contact with Ilya where it was obvious something vaguely carnal had passed between them, he thought about emulating his particular brand of assured charm. Whatever ideas he’d concocted devolved rather quickly into his own unintentional directness, and he said, “Does it scare you?”“Does climatology scare you?” Ilya’s face was measured and calm, his foot still pressed against the curved joint above Shane’s heel.
“Yeah,” the word came out like a laugh, “it does, actually. A lot.”

Shane had been on his way to his parents' car when the wind shifted, and he smelled that Rozanov, leaning against the wall and not-at-all-surreptitiously fishing a carton of cigarettes out of his pocket, must have been one of them.

“Yuna,” his dad cuts in, voice quiet, “maybe give him a second, yeah?”
Yeah, Shane agrees in his head. Give him a second.
Maybe give him a decade while they’re at it.
