Summary
What does John see when he looks at Cas?
Cas doesn’t look like a monster.
But neither does Dean.
John stands, slow. He holds out a hand. Calloused like Dean’s hands are calloused. Scarred the same way that Dean’s hands are scarred. There’s the smell of him in the air too. Earthy and dark, slightly sour around the edges. The room feels suddenly choked with it. Claustrophobic.
Cas probably smells like the fabric softener they buy in bulk at Costco, but so does Dean so he can’t tell.
John says, toneless, “I hear you’ve been driving my car.”

Dean's twenty-nine year old mother, his undefined relationship with Cas and their small family. Some kind of impossible reconciliation with John Winchester. Michael, out of his head, without destroying the world. His father's approval. To see the Grand Canyon.

"Really?" Arthur asked, brushing the dirt off of him as he glowered at the man. "Again? I had it under control - and we aren't allies!" He added heatedly. Balinor shrugged, looking nonplussed by Arthur's anger as he stroked the dragon's wing.
"I know." Balinor said simply. "But I promised my son I wouldn't let you die."
"Your...You have a son?" Arthur demanded. Again, Balinor shrugged. "Why does your son...? Nevermind. Don't save me again!" He snapped, pointing a finger at the man. He turned to stalk back to the horse only for a column of fire to blow past him. The prince jumped. He spun around to tell the man off again but immediately noticed one of the remaining bandits who had been slowly creeping towards him burnt to a crisp. He looked back at Balinor.
"Sorry."
Or
Balinor lives. Arthur will do pretty much anything to get the man to stop saving his life.

It puzzles Castiel, where Dean draws the line between what is meaningful and what it is worthless.

Cas comes back. It's not exactly the reunion that Dean is expecting.

Dean stares at him, flummoxed. Cas quite literally poured his heart out to Dean, gave a truly sappy and distressingly romantic speech and everything, then proceeded to give his life so that Dean could live his. And he wants to act like he doesn't want to see Dean, be around him, touch him?
Actually, Dean's ninety-nine percent sure that Cas probably wants to fuck him, and while he has no clue how he feels about that, he's pretty goddamn sure that means Cas doesn't get to act like this and make it authentic.
It feels strangely real, though, as if Cas wants nothing more than to get as far away from him as possible. This is a blatant contradiction. Even someone as weird as Cas doesn't want to get away from the person they have the desire to fuck five ways to Sunday, that they're in love with. That's not how these things work, so Dean isn't buying it.

Summary
When Castiel Novak returns to his hometown to teach at Garrison High School in the wake of his mother's death, he discovers that there is one thing nearly the entire religious population seems to agree upon: everyone hates the Winchesters. They hate Sam's temper and John's alcoholism and Dean's interminable silence. Castiel is just getting a handle on the whole free will thing, but he's beginning to suspect that he might feel a little bit differently, and the more he learns about the Winchesters, the more he understands that the entire town couldn't hate Dean's silence half as much as Dean himself hates his own words. Stutterer!Dean/Teacher!Cas.

Summary
Things were a blur before "After". They weren't great by any means, but compared to what was happening to Dean now, "Before" was practically heaven. Dean's having trouble hiding the bruises, but if Sam knows, he doesn't seem to put two and two together; Dean absolutely refuses to believe that his brother just doesn't care. He tries to push through it, knowing that things have been tough on his dad, but when he starts to fear that one of these times his father isn't going to stop, he heads out to seek refuge from a few friends. When word gets out that John is hellbent on getting Dean back, though, Dean's afraid that he might've just brought three innocents into a war that they were never meant to be apart of. *Title from the song "No Son Of Mine" by Genesis.*

Summary
Associating with angels had consequences, Bobby had explained to him. “They ain’t the God-abiding, harp-toting little healers that you’d expect, Dean. They’re…different. They…”
They claim things, Bobby had said, with a shiver. People. They claimed humans and stole them from the camp and whatever happened to them afterwards, no one knew.
After Castiel dies, the portal to the other world opens and obliterates the universe that Sam and Dean know. Bobby takes them in, teaches them how to survive in a world with new rules and new consequences, a world where humans live in camps enclosed by high walls to keep angels out, where angels will do anything and everything to seduce and lure humans away. Why and to where beyond the wall, no one knows.
While Sam struggles to find a way home, a grieving Dean loses all hope.
But then one night, while Dean's guarding the wall, in the middle of a snowy blizzard and under the cover of darkness, an angel with beautiful black wings and a familiar face appears.
His name is Castiel.
And he asks Dean to go with him.
