Summary
It’s been nearly 27 years since Eva Stratt forced Ryland Grace to board the Hail Mary and sent him off to his death for the greater good of mankind. Meanwhile, Eva and the Project Hail Mary team have been fighting a losing battle against the cooling sun—and their own demons—trying to make sure there were still people to be saved by the time the crew could send a solution home. Right on schedule, the beetles are returning to Earth, hopefully with the answer to saving the world. Grace's mouth, still smushed against my xenonite, curves upward: Contentment, happiness, satisfaction. Interesting, that it should be prone to smiling when made stupid by ethanol, but not so much when it gets stupid because of a lack of sleep.

This is a fanfic heavily inspired by an AU called Backup AU by katzebruh on X and other socials. I just want to say a big thank you to katze for creating this wonderful au and for being so helpful when I had some questions about it. They did say that I’m allowed to add any headcanons/interpretations, so hey, that’s what I’ll do!
