    Summary

"This feeling that all my thoughts and memories… that they’re not mine, that they’ve been put into my head by somebody else… does it ever go away?”

It comes out almost pleadingly, the desperation Gustave tried to suppress for months now bleeding into his voice.

    Something softens in Verso’s expression.

Or: the Maelle ending. Coming to terms with being brought back and repainted. Gustave is looking for some answers, so he goes to the one person who can provide them. Verso is absolutely done with this life, but feels obligated to at least talk to him.

They find that being a copy of a dead man is less unbearable when you're not alone.

    Summary

He plays all the sharp, loud notes, he plays and plays until it bleeds, until it reverberates in his skull in a relentless cacophony. Until it echoes in the hall, up to the glass ceiling.

A sharp movement in the audience catches his eye, beyond the halo of the stage light.

At first he thinks it’s Maelle, that she’s spotted him doing something that she doesn’t like, doesn’t fit the perfect image of it in her head, but…

    It’s not Maelle.

    No, it’s Gustave.

Gustave knows something's wrong with Lumiére. With himself. With Maelle. And he knows he'll find answers with the mysterious pianist. And Verso sees.

    Summary

"It's a big thing," Sciel says, conversationally. "Having one. It changes the shape of everything. Pierre, Lune, and I—we talked about it for a long time before. It still managed to surprise us, how much." She glances at him. "Do you ever think about it?"

The question lands lightly. That is the thing about Sciel—she puts things down rather than pressing them in. Verso is aware, not for the first time, that this is probably what makes her so effective at interrogations like these.

"I think Gustave has found his way to something that works," he says, which is not an answer to the question she asked, and they both know it. "He's not—wanting for anything. He's got more than enough people in his life who need him."

Sciel makes a small sound. Not disagreement, exactly.

    "What," Verso says.

"Nothing." A pause. "I'm just—thinking about what 'enough' means,” she looks at him sideways, "and I think you're avoiding the question."

In which two people who had stopped expecting things discover, somewhat belatedly, that they want the same one.

    Summary

The first words your soulmate says to you appear on your skin. And they only appear once—everybody knows that.
So when Verso Dessendre walks into Gustave's garage with a vintage car that needs restoring and eyes that hold eight years of secrets, and Gustave's wrist burns with new words - eight years after his soulmate abandoned him - he knows something is wrong.
Apparently, the universe isn't done with them yet.
This is a story about sacrifice and second chances, about the lies we tell to protect the ones we love, and about fighting for happiness even when the world says you don't deserve it.
Some love stories get a second chance. Some get second words.

    Summary

    “I want to die.”

That gets his attention — Gustave’s eyes fly wide open, and he takes a step back. Like Verso is a lunatic who is better to be avoided. “I beg your pardon?”

“I want to die,” Verso repeats. “And I can’t do it on my own. You’re one of the smartest men in Lumière, you’re good with chroma. I need your help.”

Or: Verso is trying to find a way out. Gustave helps.
