Summary
Lightning sparks across the spires of bone jutting from his shoulder and Piers sobs, knowing there’s nowhere he can hide in the cramped confines of the escape pod. He shouldn’t have hesitated, shouldn’t have given Chris the opportunity to grab him and haul him inside before the door sealed shut, but he hadn’t and now Chris was locked in a glorified metal coffin with him. His body feels like it’s on fire, the virus stoking his metabolism to a blistering pace to fuel the mutations and growth enveloping his right side. Steam rises from his fatigues where the water evaporates, doing little to cool him and the humidity only making it harder for him to breathe.
Chris says something he doesn’t catch, stepping closer, and Piers snarls at him like an animal, like a monster, a desperate bluff to keep the distance. It makes him sick to hear a sound like that come from his own throat but it works; Chris puts his hands up placatingly and takes a few steps back, giving him space.
Somehow, it doesn’t make him feel any better.

Summary

Summary

Disoriented, lost and angry he forced himself back on his feet. His limbs felt heavy, but not unwieldy. The hardest part was lifting his eyes, stubbornly stuck on the crumbling shape of what was left of the calcifying beast. Come on man, get a grip on yourself. The team needs you.
With no warning his gaze snapped upwards, past the cracks in the ceiling. Chris held his breath, as if it would really matter what his eyes would find.
And yet, the most twisted thing was how it still broke him. Past his blurry vision, through the ashen spores settling down, and the snow still finding its way into the depths of the earth, in the cold blue halo of the night, there it fucking was - his ghost.
