With one final swing towards the punching bag, Alec is stumbling a few steps back as he pants through aching lungs. He stands there for a moment, eyes looking forward but unseeing as he finds himself once again trapped in the confines of his own troubling thoughts; whispered words taunting him since he had gotten back together with Magnus. He pulls himself out of his clouded mind and blinks a few times, in attempt to ground himself or will away tears he can’t be too sure.

His beloved Shadowhunter is so used to being second best, feeling as though he’s a walking second place metal, that he doesn’t see how brightly he shines and how much he has effected those around him. He’s a loving and protective big brother to siblings who would do anything for him, and he’s a caring and supportive friend to whose that would have his back without a moment’s hesitation. And he’s one of the best things Magnus has ever had in his long and lonely life; Alec doesn’t see that he’s the reason Magnus is now excited to wake up in the morning.
