Summary
How did Holly Munro come to be the perfectionist, slightly neurotic individual we see in the books? Why did she train to become an agent? How did she join Rotwell? There's so little of her backstory in canon. Here's my (completely invented) take on her life before Lockwood and Co. These are snippets from Holly's childhood and young adulthood, revealing key formative experiences that shaped her into the character we know.
Excerpt from Ch. 8: Ranged around the iron circle were the ghostly figures of seven massive hounds. They were powerfully built, with barrel-chests and muscular limbs coated in thick, coal-black fur. Their baleful eyes gleamed red, and their open mouths revealed a multitude of razor-sharp, yellowed teeth. As Holly watched, greenish drool dripped from the slavering jaws of the dog closest to her and oozed, hissing, to the cellar floor. There was a moment of stillness as the hounds considered them with cocked heads, their blood-red tongues lolling.

Summary
After revealing his magic, Merlin promised his king that he would tell him if he was hurt or needed help. The aftermath of an assassination attempt sent him, injured, stumbling into Arthur's chambers to fulfill his promise. Once he did that, he figured he could finish getting ready for the visiting delegation and wrap up his chores. He wasn't sure why Arthur was being so weird about it. He was only lightly shot.

"What are you doing?" Arthur asks, announcing his presence.
Merlin's head jerks up, startled and then he — disappears. Arthur's mouth falls open, and he stares at the empty bed. A moment later, Merlin's voice speaks, out of thin air.
"I was practicing something." And then, tentatively, "I don't quite have it yet, but I think it's working."
"You think," Arthur says, faintly.
