Mike can hear the smile in Will's voice when he picks up, and it’s startling how easily he can imagine it.Will, leaning against the wall of his new house. Probably wearing bright colours and flip flops- or whatever it is that Max keeps assuring him everyone in California wears. He knows the exact angles at which Will’s smile tilts, different depending on whether he’s teasing or just excited.
Closing his eyes, Mike tries to remember the angle of El’s smile.
He can't. It troubles him enough to ruin everything.
“Is El there?” he asks. When Will responds, there is no longer a smile in his voice.
Only a couple of Mike's calls to Lenora actually go through, and he never says quite what he means.
Until he does.

Summary
The tension is finally starting to leave Will's body. "It told me that one day I won't love you anymore," he says under his breath, so quietly Mike has to strain his ears to hear it.
Mike freezes. "What?"
"It's not true. I'll always love you. Even when I’m gone.”
Will falls asleep in Mike's arms, the rise and fall of his chest even. Mike can barely breathe.
Mike Wheeler has two secrets: the first being that his best friend is now his boyfriend, and the second that the love of his life keeps trying to kill him.
The more Will gets possessed, the harder it is to bring him back. But Mike's love is no ordinary force—even against an evil as relentless as this.

Will held up his hands as he shook his head. "I know. But it—he—will be fine. You'll see."
Nancy choked on a sob. "He's dead! How is he going to be okay?"

Summary
After watching Mike put on his tough facade at a meeting with the Upside Down gang, Will finds Mike breaking down in his room, terrified of the future and wondering if he has what it takes to face it. Mike turns to Will for comfort, and though Will fights to convince himself that Mike doesn't reciprocate his feelings, their lies unravel and their true feelings for each other are finally revealed.
OR
Mike hurts more than he lets on, and Will is the perfect person to help him through it.

Will settles for a small hum instead, not sure that Mike is in the right state for another encroaching love confession, not that he properly understood the first, not that Will let him.
Mike replies with a question, “How are you?”
Will can feel his forehead crease with the inquiry, typical Mike, checking up on Will in the face of his own broken body. “Me?” Will states, incredulous, knowing his face is telling Mike the same thing.
OR: After a nasty attack Mike ends up in hospital, Will visits him.
