Shadow Milk’s breath caught. His shoulders went rigid again, as if the word husband had struck some hidden bell inside his chest.
“Can’t I know my husband?” Pure Vanilla whispered, and another kiss followed, this one at the corner of Shadow Milk’s mouth. “Can’t I have the pleasure of knowing his aches? Of kissing his wounds, of learning every line of him like scripture?”
His hands— those healer’s hands —rose again, fingers brushing through raven-dark hair and then sliding down to cradle his jaw.
Shadow Milk’s eyes had squeezed shut. His breath came unsteady. His hands still clutched his robes, but the grip was looser now. Less armor, more uncertainty.
“Allow me to be selfish,” Pure Vanilla whispered against his temple. “Just this once. Allow me to hold you.”
