Kaveh paused. The soft, calming voice coming through the speakers drifted into his ears like a soothing ripple of nostalgia that simultaneously brought him relief and alarmed shock. It was familiar with its gentle, low cadence, and seemed to plunge him into a well of memories he had managed to avoid falling into for longer than he could count.

Or: five years after their breakup, Kaveh finds out that Alhaitham is working as a radio host, and starts listening.

    Summary

“Just because the dormice you gifted me for dinner last night were unexpectedly delicious”—Kaveh caws on, still aggrieved—“it doesn’t mean I'd settle for any plain and ugly stick for the nest! This is why I say you have no appreciation for beauty, Haitham!”

Kaveh’s fastidiousness over the aesthetics of their nest never ceases to puzzle Al-Haitham. What does he mean these aren’t good sticks? Al-Haitham plucked them earlier from a large adhigama tree similar to their own, complete with sprightly leaves, blooming buds, and a bright sheen to its bark—all signs of the tree’s good health.

“Weren’t you the one who once said that functional quality and safety are equally as important as aesthetics?” Al-Haitham retorts with a low ee-chup. “These ugly but sturdy sticks are perfectly serviceable for a durable nest foundation.”

Kaveh and Al-Haitham made for an extremely odd pair in Avidya Forest. After all, whoever heard of a peregrine falcon and a bird-of-paradise sharing a nest together?

    Summary

“Do you think we can save it?” Al-Haitham asks, none the wiser. “It’s just the roof that’s gone. I would trust you to make the arrangements, senior, if I weren’t so worried you’d bankrupt me.”
Kaveh does not take the bait, does not bite back at all. Instead, he holds a hand up to an ash-covered wall. His fingers come back stained.
He wants to say yes. There’s nothing Kaveh wants more than to close his eyes to block out the burnt, blackened view of the house destined to fall. He could imagine it exactly as he left it then: sunlight streaming through the beautifully stained windows. Al-Haitham on the divan, a Kaveh-shaped spot beside him. Not that it would work, even if Kaveh never opened his eyes again. Gods, Kaveh tries, squeezing his eyes shut when the sight becomes unbearable. But the burnt smell permeates the air, inescapable, as the heavy feeling of soot clouds his lungs.
    The house is unlivable.

After the burning of irminsul, Al-Haitham and Kaveh find their house unliveable. Kaveh is totally normal about this. Totally.

If Kaveh told anyone that his current best friend was a crow, they would call him insane.

Especially as a single man living alone, with barely enough time to do anything fun with his actual human friends outside of overworking himself on commissions, stressing over clients, and crying himself to sleep over the occasional glass of wine.

Kaveh gets courted by a crow and unknowingly finds himself a husband.

    Wow. What an eyeful.

Two people are on the bed, having passionate sex, if the marks and moans are anything to go by. Heat rushes to his face, and he lets out an embarrassing squeak at the shock.

Both men turn to look at him, but the blond one catches his eye first. Kaveh doesn’t like looking at his reflection, but he’d be damned if he didn’t recognize himself. Thankfully, the sheets pool around the other Kaveh’s hips, so can’t see where his body connects with his partner.

At this moment, Kaveh realizes. If he’s here with his older self, then that must mean…

    Oh archons.

After Kaveh and Alhaitham fight and fall out of each other’s lives, they find themselves in a strangely familiar house.

If only they knew what was waiting for them behind that bedroom door.
