“Night…?”
His head whips around, settling back on the stranger with a piercing gaze. Nobody calls him that. Nobody. He should eviscerate this fool for even daring to address him in such a way.
And yet… there’s something about the voice that sounds so familiar, but so different at the same time. Nightmare can’t draw his eyes away from them. They repeat his name again, a bit more hesitantly this time. They take a step forward. Then another. The hood comes down, and Nightmare sees golden eyelights. Above them rests a golden crown.
The air leaves Nightmare’s chest. He can’t breathe. He can’t breathe.
OR: A short exploration of the worst day of Nightmare's life, and the years leading up to a less than ideal reunion.

Days at work were all the same for Reaper: go to a given place, reap the souls, and leave. It wasn't supposed to go a different way, he wasn't supposed to meet a child in the middle of a dead universe, and he definitely wasn't supposed to take him home with him.
But what else could he do ? This kid needed him, he couldn't leave him behind.
