Yamato cherishes the little slip of vivre card already, cradled protectively in his hands in case a stray seaside breeze tries to blow it away—but it’s still an object, something that can be destroyed or confiscated if ever discovered. He’s not close enough. He’s not going to make it. Even if he managed to shake off the soldiers in front of him and just threw his whole body at full-speed between Luffy and Akainu to take the blow, he wouldn’t get there fast enough. He doesn’t have enough time. He’s going to lose another brother, only this time it’s going to happen right in front of his eyes, from seven—five—three feet away.
He’s ten years old again and learning what grief is. He’s ten years old and all that’s left of Sabo is the letter in his hand and a shared dream and the promise that Ace will look after their silly baby brother while he’s gone.
“DON’T TOUCH HIM!” Ace screams. It’s pure desperation. It’s the last human thing he’ll ever say if Luffy dies here.

Summary
“I’m glad you’re here,” Luffy says when the bowl is empty. He’s clearly exhausted, his limbs and the lines of his body all drooping as though his bones have all gone wobbly. He can barely sit up on his own. “Sorry they asked you to come.”
“‘Sorry’?” Sabo parrots, not sure he heard correctly. There’s a dull sort of horror blooming in the pit of his stomach like a sick flower. “Why ‘sorry’?”
“Ace had his own adventures, and I have mine,” Luffy mumbles, drifting off again. “You have yours, too. I don’t want you to miss them. I don’t want you to miss anybody. Or to… be here when you’d rather be…”
“Luffy—”
“Free,” Luffy manages. “Sabo’s supposed to be free.”

Summary
It’s an old wives’ tale. A sailor’s superstition. The sort of thing that isn’t taken seriously and that no one really believes, except no one disbelieves it, either.
A respawned Fruit, they say, remembers the body before. It retains an echo of its former user.
Sabo didn’t put much stock in those stories, because there was no reliable way to study the phenomenon without a significant amount of murder, and also because it didn’t really apply to him besides. He had a million other things on his mind, an army to babysit, and no plans of becoming a Fruit user in the first place.
The universe sure loves to laugh at him.

Summary
Ace comes down upon Akainu like a Sea King, a gaping maw of fire and teeth, melting absolutely everything he touches. Akainu’s magma isn’t hot enough to save him. He dies, presumably screaming. It’s impossible to hear anything over Ace’s howling.
It’s not a human sound. It’s raw and animal.
And it doesn’t stop. Marco is standing nearly at the edge of the wharf, his ankles inches away from the drop into the sea, when he realizes Ace isn’t going to stop.

I should have been there is on the tip of Sabo’s tongue, but it seems a waste of breath to say something everyone already knows. I’m sorry surfaces next, is the obvious right thing, but what he actually says is, “I had to come.”
His voice is just barely more than a whisper. Ace’s face only screws up more.
“I had to,” Sabo chokes out. “Ace, I had to.”
Even if you hate me, he doesn’t say. You’re my brother. I’ll always come for you.

Summary
Sunshine, Ace calls out once, not knowing he was going to say it until he did. Sabo blinked, taken by surprise. He turned to look at his twin, curiosity clear on his face along with a complete lack of confusion that was telling.
They both knew who he meant. Luffy knew it, too, and came running the way he always came running when one of his brothers called his name. There were leaves in his hair and scraggly flowering weeds crammed in his pockets and—always—a big smile on his face, bright and beaming.

Summary
“I bet that some people, who fought in that war for Ace, who loved him and didn’t even know me, wish that it had happened differently.” Luffy still doesn’t look up, expression unreadable when he adds, “Sabo loves us both, but he loved Ace longer.”
If Sabo had been stabbed with sea stone, it would have hurt less. If he had burned with the Grey Terminal, or drowned at sea in front of the Celestial Dragons, it would have hurt less than this.
He’s on his feet before he’s aware of moving, seat tipping over and rolling away behind him. He can feel the steam start to lift off his super-heated skin as Ace’s fire inside him reacts to the way his heart is racing.
“Don’t say that,” he says, too loud, almost a shout.
