Hayden hated the guy. Hated him.
Hated his stupid, smug smirk and the myriad of insults he threw Hayden’s way and the way he made fun of Shane like it was a funny game then looked him up and down like a piece of meat and his reputation of sleeping with everything that fucking moved and the memories of being slammed into the boards by him and quite literally everything about this Russian dickhead.
And he hated that he was now going to have to do everything in his power to learn how to tolerate Rozanov because Shane was inexplicably and hopelessly in love with him, and Shane was his brother in every fucking thing but blood, and Hayden was not going to keep being responsible for that sad puppy look on his face every time he realized how poorly they got along.
So far, Hayden sucked at it. Big time.

It bothers Shane that Hayden and Ilya don't get along, so Hayden is putting in the effort to try and see these redeeming qualities Shane claims the guy has. Over the years it becomes easier and easier, until one day, he realizes he doesn't have to actually try anymore.

“Can we just ask Mom if we can meet on Saturday?” he asks carefully, not wanting to seem like a petulant child or to start unnecessary shit with Ilya. Ilya drops his phone on his chest so he can give Shane his full attention. “Why?” he asks.
“I told you already.” Shane says, not wanting to elaborate anymore than he already has—frankly, he’s a little annoyed that it seems he has to spell it out for Ilya.
Ilya cocks his head to the side as if in deep thought: brow furrowed, lips curling into a smile.
“You want to be alone,” he says slowly as he starts to sit up and move over to Shane’s side of the couch. Shane’s face shows a slight scowl accompanying a deep pink blush under his freckles. “Yes,” he exhales, finally confident Ilya understands what he wants, what he needs.“We can be alone,” Ilya purrs as he moves to cover Shane’s body and lays a soft kiss on his lips. “After we have lunch with Mom and Dad,” he says, smirking as he brackets Shane’s hips with his knees, and pushes down until his crotch is flush against Shane’s.

Summary
Shane Hollander loves playing for the Ottawa Centaurs. Leaving Montreal, as painful as it had been, really has been one of the best decisions he’s ever made.
He gets to play with his husband. He’s supported at all levels, from upper management down to the most casual of fans, and his teammates are genuinely kind and lovely people who care about him and his life and are invested in his well-being.
Considering where he came from, Shane thinks it’s wonderful to work with such caring players who want what’s best for him and notice things about his life. It's really, really great.
Until it isn’t, of course.
“Hollander, what the fuck is that on your face?” Zane Boodram asks in the locker room while they’re changing for game five of the first round of playoffs.
