Summary
Bilbo Baggins was dying. It was not of a wound of any kind, nor of sickness. He was dying of age, in his sleep. As he lay in one of the many, generally comfortable beds in Rivendell, with his dearest nephew at the bed to his side, he could feel his last breath leaving him. As his mind faded into the darkness, he looked over his life.
He had been through pain, suffering, near-death, emotional trauma, and elongated life. He had watched the man he loved die, and he had cried enough tears to last a lifetime. And now, 62 years later, he was dying. He had left Erebor all those years ago after the death of Fili, Kili and Thorin, but his heart had forever remained in the lonely mountain, along with his One.
So as he lay there on his bed, listening to the sound of Frodo sleeping, it occured to Bilbo that the trip to the Undying Lands that was to take place the next day wasn't meant for him. He was dying, after all.
Bilbo Baggins had had enough pain for a lifetime. As he took his last chance to, he thought to himself: 'If only I could have one more chance.'
And then he was gone. His old, hurt, and tearstained heart had given out.
But his story did not end there.

He trailed inside the house behind Hannibal like he was spellbound, escaping the icy wind, he allowed Hannibal to take his drenched jacket off his bony shoulders. They ate, they laughed, they talked about something but Will can’t recall what it was, he was paying more attention to how consonants rolled off Hannibal’s tongue.

Summary
The closer he gets to the still, silent man, the more details of his appearance he notices. First, the man is naked, Will shudders in his jacket and moves faster; second, the man’s skin is pale and unblemished, no wounds, no bruises and no dirt. He might not be dead then, hopefully, just sleeping in a bog nude for some reason. If that’s true, Will may be able to save him, he has to get to him faster. His boots begin to sink, it’s more and more difficult to fight the suction, but he’s so close now that he sees the third thing, that the man is absolutely beautiful. Will’s stuck to his knees, he puts his stick on the ground for support and jerks his leg to free himself, several more lunges and he’ll be right beside him.

In which Mr. Bennet finds a use for his most studious daughter: dealing with any uninteresting correspondence. That is to say, all but that from his academic fellows and rare books dealers. Thus, a Mary Bennet, still as studious and somewhat awkward as in canon, but newly familiar with legal notices such as those regarding entails, the bills and orders required to properly run a household, and letters about investments from Mr. Gardiner, stumbles across the initial letter from Mr. Collins, as well as a follow up inquiring about whether a response had been lost in the mail. She takes it upon herself to reply in her father’s place.
