    Sokka blinks at him a couple times, pretending he has no idea what he’s talking about.

    Bato shrugs as he turns away. “It’s good to see you happy, Sokka,” he throws over his shoulder.

    Sokka stares at him as he disappears out the door.

    “Well,” he says without really thinking about it, “at least Bato approves.”]

    The morning that Hakoda arrives at Boiling Rock, circumstances prevent Sokka from meeting him, and from looping him in to their alliances with Suki and Zuko.
    Without Sokka as a go-between, Hakoda somehow still, inevitably, ends up acting as a protector to Zuko when another prisoner recognizes and targets him.
    Having already humiliated the warden in front of the entire prison, Hakoda is assigned a punishment that would spell certain death for someone who doesn't have literal fire burning under their skin.
