Minghao swallows firmly and digs his fingers into the dirt. “But you don't want to be.”
“Why not?”
How does Minghao explain it? The rejection, the isolation, the side-eyed stares, poorly-hidden whispers, those looks? Mingyu would never be able to understand what a lifetime of never being invited to play with the other kids was like. Minghao hopes so, anyway.
“People don’t like you if you’re magic,” Minghao mumbles, knees drawn to his chest, stare fixed firmly at a stick on the ground. The temperature drops quickly, sharply enough to make Mingyu shiver a little from the corner of Minghao’s eye. Minghao flinches.
“Well, I like you,” Mingyu retorts.
An outcast from his village for the unexplainable phenomena he causes, Minghao finds a real home in the nature elementals and spirits in the forest—and the strangely polished boy who stumbles into his forest one day.

In the end, it all comes back to Mingyu. Minghao has been in love with him for a decade, give or take. Mingyu's loved him back the whole time. They've never talked about it.
Mingyu looks at him, not saying anything, and Minghao is about to prompt him when he whispers, "Would it really be so bad?" He doesn't have to elaborate; Minghao knows what he's talking about; Mingyu knows that he knows. He can't quite believe Mingyu decided to bring it up now, for the first time in a decade, in the middle of practice. Chan's wish must have really hit home.
"Yes."
"I don't think it would be."

One became two, and each will forever seek for the presence of the other. Each distance in between meant agony and pain.
Eons later, this would be called soulmates.
