Summary
The first morning the flowers appeared, people were delighted by them. A lush spray of blush-pink blossoms that draped above the white marble lintel of a heavy wooden door, they looked like a miracle, a gorgeous mystery in the middle of the drab city. They were a bright, lush sweep of life in an otherwise lifeless world. Eyes widened and then crinkled with smiles that stretched cold-chapped lips and warmed hearts. Women on the way to and from the market found their baskets and burdens felt lighter. Men felt a joy in their steps as they passed. Children, for whom winter seemed like it had lasted half their lives, stood across the street and stared, itching to dig into the plush, soft petals and smell the scent of green growing things bruising against their fingers.
Those that passed too close to the door found that the cloying sweet scent of roses clung to their lungs, making their hearts beat faster and their blood rise with unnamed longing.
