Listen I just watched the cursed child and ugh. Ignoring all the issues with JKR being a horrible person. The play had potential to be really emotional and it had its moments but overall kind of sucked (the stage effects were fantastic though).
This fic here is more the vibe an actually good version of that play could’ve gone. All the characters are fleshed out well in a way that makes them more likeable. Harry would be a good dad and I will die on this hill.
I think Harry doesn’t know how to be a person because he was never allowed to be and child trauma is hard to overcome and affects your life in weird ways. I think the author did a good job of putting Harry in a position to see that his kids don’t need him to be perfect but just to be someone that can show them love and support. Being a parent is hard because you’re trying to avoid the pitfalls of your own childhood and there’s a constant anxiety if fucking up. Harry had no one to be there for him as a kid and he wants to make sure he’s there for his kids but he also feels pressure by the world to play the role of a perfect hero.
The rest of this is just rants about the play so skip if you just want info about this fic.
Albus is such a little dick in the play. It has the major flaw of constantly saying Albus has all this pressure to be like how the world sees Harry without the audience ever really seeing anyone treat him that way. There’s only like one or two moments in the play showing us people treating Albus poorly and it’s blink and you’ll miss it moments. This makes it so Albus is less relatable to the audience and more like he’s just a whiny baby. The only times I could stand his character was when he was being a good “friend” (they hella gay btw) to Scorpius. It’s supposed to be a coming of age story for Albus but frankly it’s just not written well and you never really get to see character growth from him in my opinion.
A lot of the scenes feel half assed because no one wants to really look at the flaws of the HP universe too hard but they get brought up occasionally and then are not acknowledged to the extent they should have been. The whole scene with Harry and portrait Dumbledore is so annoying because there is no accountability that Harry deserved better. It’s just kind of like Dumbledore says I’m sorry you felt that way sucks to suck I guess.
I did not pay for tickets; I don’t support JKR and I wouldn’t have gone except my baby sister asked me to go and I’m weak to puppy dog eyes.
