With the confirmation that Mr. Hollander is attending, Ilya absolutely will follow. Even if only for a few hours, they’ll occupy the same space, the same room, maybe even talk together, laugh at jokes. Of course Ilya will attend the gala, but he can’t be too excited, lest Mr. Hollander smells his callowness through the phone, so he settles for a meek: “Maybe.”
Galas generally disinterest Ilya. Every rule, however, has its exception; after all, how could he turn down an invitation to an event he knows Mr. Hollander will be at?
