Shane stared at the message, hoping to see it read and then see Ilya start typing or see Ilya’s name pop up on his screen with an incoming call. He waited five seconds for the fairy tale to come true. Ten. Thirty seconds, breathing getting harder with every passing second.
Fuck it.
He pressed Ilya’s photo, and then after just a moment of hovering, his thumb tapped the call icon. The ringing was worse than staring at an unchanging text screen.
“Hi, this is Ilya. I will never listen to your voicemail.”
“Ilya-”
Fast-approaching light blinded Shane via the rear-view mirror, and a loud metallic explosion followed immediately after, like thunder booming a half-second after a lightning strike.

The vehemence took Scott by surprise, making him lean back a little. “Before and after, with every game you play, every battle I fight, every interview we give — we inspire people. We give people hope, and there is little that is more powerful than hope.”
