But he would never regret giving any of those things up because that would mean regretting Harry. His wonderful, darling son.
Regulus Black had given up his own dream and lover, to raise his son. Over the years he has become somewhat content with staying in the small town all his friends have left, working in a shitty hotel, and stretching every dollar to provide the best life possible for his son. Regulus is happy where he is, truly. Hense why he feels absolutely nothing but anger when James Potter, the unknowing father of his child who left him for fame, suddenly decides that he wants to be in His and Harry's life.

However, on a calm day during his fifth year, strolling through Hogwarts in his black cat form to clear his head after a tiring conversation with his mother by the flames of his dormitory, he encounters a group of Gryffindor boys, a hateful and irritating group: the Marauders.
And of course, it wouldn't be so bad to just pass by them and go on with his life, if it weren't for the fact that James Potter decided to take him (as a cat) and simply adopt him???
Although the Gryffindor dormitories are so much warmer...

“Did you invite him?” Lily said, arching a brow.
James harrumphed stroppily. “Didn’t have to. Pandora did.”
“Ah.” Lily reached over Remus to pat his shoulder. “Well, you’re doing a really good job of pretending not to care, lovely.”
James didn’t answer. Because he was suddenly distracted and also choking on a mouthful of beer. Beside him Evan snorted which James ignored, because maturity.
Regulus Black had just walked into the pub.

If you asked any of Regulus’s friends, like Barty, Evan, or Dorcas, they would’ve said, “He always remembers absolutely everything, and makes sure it comes back to bite you.”
Barty may have added, “He thinks he’s smarter than everyone else, but ain’t no way he’s smarter than me.”
If you asked any seventh-year Gryffindor, specifically one Lily Evans, she would’ve said, “He’s… a little scary but he’s truly a good person.”
And finally, if you asked James Potter, James would’ve said, “Oh, Regulus? That’s my boyfriend.”
OR: Regulus doesn't know why James picked him over Lily when Lily was obviously so much prettier, better, smarter than him. So at a Gryffindor party James invited him to one evening, Regulus decides to go ask Lily what he's doing wrong. At 4am. He's way too sober for this.
